Playing Hooky

Last Thursday school was closed for the day while I went with Bekah, mom to three of my girls, and the intern who had been staying with her family that week to Lake Nakuru National Park.

The park is not big as compared to other wildlife areas, but is home to many bird species, mammals, and predators of Kenya.  We drove on many of the roads and looked at many trees hoping to see leopard or lion, but were unable to spot any of these big cats.  We were treated to the some close ups with rhino and buffalo, antics of baboons, and many other of the grazing animals.

The lake overflowed its banks and the many of the famous flamingos have moved elsewhere as the deeper water destroyed their food supply, but a few remain.  Dead trees, cracked earth, and closed roads stand as testimony to the flooding lake and changed habitat.  During this dry season it seems to have receded a little, but depending on the next season of rain, the lake size and shoreline may continue to change.

Here is a glimpse into a day of much laughter, viewing a small bit of God's creation, bumpy trails, lots of dust, a restful lunch break, and good company.
